About Stone Chips
Stone chips on vehicle windscreens fall into four main catagories, star, bullseye, half moon and combination.
*Star Chip is a small impact mark from where the object has hit the glass, and with one or more small cracks eminating from the centre point.
*Bullseye Chip is a small impact mark where the object has hit the glass and the a dark, near perfect circle, encompassing the impact.
*Half Moon Chip is a small impact mark from where the object has hit the glass and there is a dark half bullseye encompssing the impact.
* Combination Chip is, as the name suggests a combination of a bullseye and a star break.
The best idea for any type of stone chip, is to get it proffessionally repaired as soon as it is noticed as this makes the repair more effective. If left, over time, moisture and dirt enters the impact mark and hinder the flow of repair resin and can make the stone chip repair less effective. If moisture does enter the stone chip and the temperature drops below freezing, this could freeze, expanding the chip and making it crack.
A stone chip repair is not just about getting your vehicle through an mot, but more about preserving the structural integrity of the windscreen, as with a defective windscreen the airbags, if deployed, will not work properly.
